Kenneth L. Karst, is a renowned professor of constitutional law and fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the David G. Price and Dallas P. Price Professor of Law Emeritus at UCLA, where he has taught constitutional law since 1965. The principles and values of equality are the central focus of his work. Karst has delivered invited lectures at thirteen universities around the country. He won the University's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1980, the School of Law's Rutter Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1994, and has been elected twice by graduating classes as Professor of the Year. Karst received his LL.B. from Harvard Law School in 1953. Before joining the UCLA School of Law, he taught at Ohio State University for seven years. Karst is the author of numerous books and articles, including Law's Promise, Law's Expression: Visions of Power in the Politics of Gender, Race and Religion (1993), and Belonging to America: Equal Citizenship and the Constitution (1989), which received the James A. Rawley Prize from the Organization of American Historians for "the best book on race relations in the United States." He is co-editor of the Encyclopedia of the American Constitution (2nd ed., 2000).
