Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President of the Republic of Turkey, addresses the general debate of the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, September 25 – October 01, 2018). Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said countries equipping terrorists in Syria “with tens of thousands of trucks and cargo planes loaded with weapons and ammunitions for the sake of their tactical interests will most definitely feel sorrow and regret in the future for having done so.” Addressing the General Assembly today (25 Sep), Erdoğan said Syria has become a place where the majority of the world’s countries export their radical groups adding that “supporting terrorist organizations and closing borders to refugees, while putting the entire burden on a few countries like Turkey will not give you a more secure and prosperous future; on the contrary, issues deflected in such a way will reach a point where one day the measures at hand will fall short of overcoming them.” Erdoğan said Turkey was taking an active stance in Syria and has cleared some 4,000 squared-kilometres from terrorist groups. He said Turkey was working to bring peace to the country and aimed to clear the entire Syrian territory of terrorist. He called on all parties to support a just sustainable political solution with a constructive approach. The Turkish President stressed that trade wars have harmed humanity in every age adding that the world was on the brink of yet another economic crisis. He said world leaders could not remain silent to the arbitrary cancelation of commercial agreements, the spreading prevalence of protectionism, and the use of economic sanctions as weapons. He underscored that leaders must work together to prevent damage to the world trade regime. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, President, Turkey: “It is very easy to create chaos, but it is difficult to re-establish order. And today unfortunately some countries are persistently trying to create chaos. There is no bigger danger than a world order that has lost mercy, conscience, truth, and hope; and that is the danger we are facing now.” Turning to Palestine, Erdoğan said those who “remain silent on the oppression of the Palestinians, who reduced the humanitarian assistance for them, are only increasing the courage of the oppressors.” He said Turkey would remain on the side of the “oppressed Palestinians and will protect the historical and legal status of Jerusalem, our first qibla.” The Turkish President said the United Nations has moved away from the capacity to meet the expectations of humanity of peace and welfare. He added that the Security Council has started serving the interests of its five Permanent Members and stands idle to oppression around the world. He suggested that the 193 Members of the UN be given a permanent seat on the Council on a rotational basis. He added that there was a need to increase the efficiency of the UN which he said was very important for the future of the world. ---------------------------------------- Watch General Debate of the General Assembly (in original language) unwebtv.live/73_UNGA_FL
