Show more STORYLINE Making a case for multilateralism, French President Emmanuel Macron today (25 Sep) said “only collective action allows for the upholding of the sovereignty and the equality of the people in whose name we take action.” In his speech to the General Assembly, Macron said this was “the reason we must take action against climate, demographic, and digital challenges. No one alone can tackle these.” On the issue of migration specifically, the French President said, “I don’t believe in the idea of unconditional openness, this only leads to worry and intolerance. I don’t believe either in the fallacious statements made by some in Europe and elsewhere that we would be stronger were we to close our borders.” Turning to the Iran nuclear deal, Macron said the 2015 agreement aimed “not to fuel tensions but rather to put forward a broader agenda which addresses all concerns; nuclear, ballistic, regional, caused by Iranian policies, through dialogue and multilateralism.” At a time when “our collective system is falling apart,” he called for support for “those working for peace and humanity; UNESCO, the conscience if you’d like of the United Nations, the Human Rights Council, the International Criminal Court, UNRWA, to whom we continue to contribute as I remind you here, the idea at the end of the day is allowing hundreds of thousands of children to go to school.” At a press encounter after his GA intervention, Macron commented on US President Donald Trump’s remarks on oil prices. He said that if Trump “goes to the end of his reasoning, he’ll see that it is actually good for oil prices for Iran to be able to sell again. It’s good for peace, but it is also good for the world price of oil.” Acknowledging “disagreements on various topics” with the US administration, he highlighted that “specific concrete progress with the United States” has been made “on a number of different topics, the first one is Syria.” He said “I think there’s been a change in the American commitment in that area. I’d like to applaud that the United States is more than ever committed in Syria, at least on the Syria topic, they agree with us on the importance and urgency of the humanitarian situation in the Idlib region, and like us, the want to privilege the political settlement of this situation and have an exclusive process and focus on the constitutional and electoral plan.” ---------------------------------------- Watch General Debate of the General Assembly (in original language) unwebtv.live/73_UNGA_FL
