Sheikh Hasina, Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, addresses the general debate of the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 25 September - 01 October 2018). Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her country was “appalled” by the UN reports about atrocities against the Rohingya in neighbouring Myanmar which are “tantamount to genocide and crimes against humanity.” Addressing the General Assembly today (27 Sep), Hasina shared her personal experience with war, detainment, and refuge. She said she could “feel the pain and suffering of countless people around the world, persecuted and expelled from their homes like the Rohingya” adding that it is impossible to build “peaceful, just and sustainable societies by ignoring such situations.” The Bangladeshi Prime Minster said the situation in Myanmar “reminds us of the genocide committed by the Pakistan occupation forces against [her] people in 1971.” She called on the international community to “give due importance to the atrocities and injustice suffered by the Rohingya population in Myanmar.” Hasina noted that Bangladesh was working with the Myanmar authorities to find a peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis. She added that three bilateral arrangements for Rohingya repatriation had been reached, but, despite their verbal commitment, the Myanmar authorities are yet to accept them back. The Bangladeshi Prime Minister said the 1.1 million Rohingya hosted in her country are living in an uncertain situation. She stressed that so long as the Rohingya are not able to return home, they should, as a temporary arrangement, be able to live in a good and healthy condition. She said Bangladesh had started working on a new housing facility for Rohingya refugees with arrangements made for education, health care and other needs. She called upon international organizations to join Bangladesh in this initiative and help relocate the Rohingya population to the facility. Hasina underscored that the Rohingya crisis has had its origin in Myanmar and “as such, its solution has to be found in Myanmar.” She expressed her desire for “an early, peaceful solution to the Rohingya crisis.” ---------------------------------------- Watch General Debate of the General Assembly (in original language) unwebtv.live/73_UNGA_FL
