Sergey Lavrov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, addresses the general debate of the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 25 September - 01 October 2018). In his speech to the General Assembly, Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergey Lavrov said, “we see the desire of several Western states to retain their self-proclaimed status of "world leaders" and to slow down the irreversible objective process of establishing multipolarity.” Lavrov said “today we all are witnessing a collision of two opposite trends” and proceeded to explain that on one side there is “the strengthening of polycentric principles of the world order, the steady development of new centers of economic growth, the aspiration of peoples to preserve sovereignty and choose development models that are consistent with their national, cultural, and religious identities.” On the other hand, said Russian diplomat, “we see the desire of several Western states to retain their self-proclaimed status of "world leaders" and to slow down the irreversible objective process of establishing multipolarity. To that end, these powers do not hesitate to use any methods, including political blackmail, economic pressure, and brute force.” Lavrov also said “Our Western colleagues are persistently trying to substitute some type of a "rules-based order" for the supremacy of law in the world affairs” and that “baseless accusations of interference into internal affairs of certain countries are being made simultaneously with overt endeavours to undermine and topple democratically elected governments.” On the situation in Ukraine, Russian Foreign Minister said “the growth of radical nationalism and neo-fascism in Ukraine – where criminals who fought under the SS banners have been declared heroes - is one of the main factors in the protracted intra-Ukrainian conflict,” and that “the only way to settle this conflict is to ensure a comprehensive and consistent implementation of the Minsk Package of Measures.” Package of Measures for the Implementation of the Minsk Agreements was agreed by the Trilateral Contact Group at the Summit in Minsk in February 2015, when the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, France, and Germany produceed a 13-point road map to stop the fighting in eastern Ukraine, a deal overseen by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). In his speech, Lavrov said Russia “supports the activities of the OSCE Mission in Ukraine and is ready to provide its observers with the UN protection.” Asked about the developments in the Middle East peace process at a press briefing following his address to the General Assembly, Lavrov said “we see what is going on” and that there is “an attempt, persistent attempt to dismantle all the basic cornerstones of the potential deal for a two-state solution and this is a cause for concern.” He said “whatever the Palestinians believe they should do in these circumstances we will certainly understand and support.” ----------------------- Watch General Debate of the General Assembly (in original language) unwebtv.live/73_UNGA_FL ‎متابعة باللغة العربية أعمال المداولات العامة رفيعة المستوى للجمعيه العامة unwebtv.live/73_UNGA_AR 敬请收看联合国大会一般性辩论(中文同声传译) unwebtv.live/73_UNGA_ZH Suivez le débat de l'Assemblée générale (en français) unwebtv.live/73_UNGA_FR Transmisión del debate de la Asamblea General de las Naciones Unidas (en español) unwebtv.live/73_UNGA-ES Смотрите Общие прения Генеральной Ассамблеи (на русском) unwebtv.live/73_UNGA_RU #UNGA #UnitedNations
