Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs of the Republic of India, addresses the general debate of the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 25 September - 01 October 2018). Addressing the General Assembly today (29 Sep) in New York, the Indian Minister of External Affairs Sushma Swaraj noted that the existential threats of terrorism and climate change are the biggest challenges of the era. On terrorism, Swaraj said that Osama Bin Laden, the architect of 9/ 11 was given “safe haven” in Pakistan, adding that “Pakistan’s commitment to terrorism as an instrument of official policy has not abated one bit. Neither has its belief in hypocrisy.” Further on her country’s relation with Pakistan, the Minister for External Affairs said “time and again, Pakistan accuses India of human rights violations. Who can be a greater transgressor of human rights than a terrorist? Those who take innocent human lives in pursuit of war by other means are defenders of inhuman behavior, not of human rights.” She continued, “Pakistan glorifies killers; it refuses to see the blood of innocents. It has become something of a habit with Pakistan to throw the dust of deceit and deception against India in order to provide some thin cover for its own guilt. The United Nations has seen this before.” On UN reform, Swaraj said “the United Nations must be based on the principles of the family. In the UN we cannot say this is ‘I, me, mine’, this forum is ‘we, us, ours.’ And it should run on those principles only.” The Indian Ambassador also reaffirmed her country’s commitment to climate change.
