Denis Ronaldo Moncada Colindres, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Nicaragua, addresses the general debate of the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 25 September - 01 October 2018). Nicaragua’s Foreign Minister, Denis Moncada, today (1 Oct) said “once again” his country is “facing a threat from the United States,” aiming to stop “the social, economic, and cultural development” of the Nicaraguan people. Moncada denounced “their interventionism, and interference, threatening to pass a bill in the US congress by which international financial institutions would be compelled to oppose granting loans to Nicaragua.” The Foreign Minister said “the attempted coup d’état that we have conquered in Nicaragua is the result of this interventionism,” denouncing the events as “terrorism disguised as peaceful protest,” which had led to, “the heinous killing of citizens and policemen, arson of public and private property, robbery, rape, as well as extortion, torture, and cruel and inhuman treatment.” On 5 September, the Security Council met to discuss ongoing unrest in the country, where more than 300 people have been killed and over 2,000 injured in the wake of anti-government protests that began in April. ----------------------- Watch General Debate of the General Assembly (in original language) unwebtv.live/73_UNGA_FL
