Marc-André Blanchard, Chair of the Delegation of Canada, addresses the general debate of the 73rd Session of the General Assembly of the UN (New York, 25 September - 01 October 2018). The Chair of the Canadian Delegation Marc-André Blanchard told the General Assembly that “the crimes against humanity committed against the Rohingya of Myanmar including the systematic use of rape as a weapon of war are utterly unacceptable.” Addressing the 73rd General Assembly today (01 Oct), the Canadian Ambassador reiterated his country’s commitment in fighting against human rights violations. Stating his country’s position on the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar, he said “the Canada’s parliament unanimously adopted a motion naming these crimes as genocide, and urging the Security Council to refer these appalling acts to the ICC.” He reiterated that “the pledge of the Rohingya people need a response.” Turning to Crimea, Blanchard said “there is no doubt, whatsoever the illegal annexation and occupation that is ongoing in Crimea are a violation of international law.” He continued “the respect for the sovereignty of the State and the for that territory integrity is not merely a theoretical necessity, it is a founding principle of the Charter of the United Nations. We cannot allow Russia to continue with these destabilizing measures.” The Chair of the Canadian Delegation also reaffirmed his country’s commitment to combatting climate change, achieving Sustainable Development Goals, and the global refugees and migrant crises. The Canadian Ambassador also highlighted the importance of international cooperation. He said “bringing people together is our calling card.
