The novel, "All American Boys" by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely received the inaugural Walter Dean Myers Award for outstanding children's literature in a young adult category. The award, to be known as "The Walter," is given in honor of children's author, Walter Dean Myers (1937-2014). Myers was the third National Ambassador for Young People's Literature and a champion of diverse literature. Two other books honored included "Enchanted Air: Two Cultures, Two Wings" by Margarita Engel and "X" by Kekla Magoon and Ilyasah Shabazz. Speakers included author Ellen Oh, Acting Librarian of Congress David Mao, author/illustrator Christopher Myers (Walter's son) and author Jon Scieszka, the first National Ambassador for Young People's Literature.
