Tracking the Provenance of Printing in Afghanistan (1871-78)

submitted by Marvin's Underground Evening Lectures on 10/06/18 1

Elham Bakhtary investigated the lithographs' literary influences and argued that the lithographs espoused a unique ethno-Islamic ideology that challenged the substance of Islamic revivalism in India, but also employed the latter's technological and discursive methods in doing so. The lecture concluded with how this similarity suggests that ideas and print technology in South Asia traveled along similar itineraries in the 19th century. Speaker Biography: Elham Bakhtary was a 2016-2017 CLIR/Mellon Fellow. He works in the Library of Congress Preservation Research and Testing Division and is a Ph.D candidate in history at George Washington University.
