The Ivanpah Desert Tortoise Research Facility in the Mojave Desert is home base for conservation biologists looking for ways to preserve and protect the region's threatened desert tortoise population. Built by Chevron Environmental Management Company for donation to the National Parks Service, the facility is dedicated to researching "headstart" strategies that could help prepare young tortoises to survive in the wild.
