This video is about where to live and to avoid if you are moving to Madrid, Spain to study abroad, participate in the Erasmus program, teach abroad, participate in one of the language assistant programs such as the auxiliares de conversacion, BEDA or MEDDEAS, etc. This video may not apply to you if you are moving with a family to Madrid because you might want to live close to certain schools or in more residential areas. ***Link below to Madrid Neighborhoods Map When I first moved to Madrid I lived in the Barrio de La Conception/Pueblo Nuevo area and it was alright, but about 30 minutes on the metro (not including walking to the metro) and the area was more residential. There are many areas outside the center that are nice, but I don’t recommend them because you will usually always be going to the center to meet up with friends. Recommended areas: Anywhere within 3-4 metro stops from “Puerta del Sol” -Sol, Gran Via, Callao, Chueca, Malasaña, Plaza de Espana, Moncloa, Arguelles -La Latina, Las Letras, Huertas, Embajadores, Lavapies, Atocha -Salamanca, Chamberi, Rio Rosas -Nuevos Ministerios and Plaza de Castilla (very north Madrid) are nice but definitely more business areas that the typical student/20 something might find less interesting to live in vs a business professional ***Madrid neighborhoods map: travel.usnews.com/Madrid_Spain/Area_Map/ *I would avoid anything out near the airport because it is just far away and anything North East such as Hortaleza area and beyond and anything east/southeast of retiro because it is also far away from the center. It could work if it is close to your school or place of work, but it is kind of boring otherwise. If you are living with a significant other, then you might have more flexibility.
