NOTE: From Dutchground Media comment: I think you should mention that when selecting “leave files in place” fcpx doesn’t do anything with these files... so if you’d be importing from an sd card this way, your original (hq files) media will be gone when you remove the sd card from your computer... you have to copy all content to a folder where you want it to be stored first...
