EQ is short for equalization or equilizer, which is another word for fancy tone controls. An equilizer adjusts the frequencies of audio. Since video editors are visual, it would be nice if we could actually see audio frequencies. That would help us understand how to adjust them with an equilizer. As a matter of fact, there is a way to see the frequencies of audio in Final Cut Pro X.
