Week 12 of a series I'm calling "52 Licks." 1 new jazz phrase each week for 2013. This week we step away from the bebop stuff we've been dealing with and tackle a Jeff "Tain" Watts phrase. It works well for soloing and comping. Although he plays this phrase and a bunch of similar ones on tons of recordings, I grabbed a pretty straight forward version off a Jim Snidero album called "Mixed Bag." It's on the tune "Duff's Thing." In the video, I duffed up the title by calling it "Duff's Tune" but that's not right. He plays it around 5:06 when he's trading with the horns. Check out a PDF of the phrase here: www.mediafire.com/view/?8dj76qcjjoxyujy The PDF just shows a 4 bar phrase with a simple ending. Tain uses it for varying lengths and starts it on various beats...so you should too! Good Luck! Justin
