Harmful Chemicals Might Be Lurking in Fast-Food Packaging Welcome to another Health News video news release brought to you by Health News. In today’s news we look at wrappers and boxes used in fast food restaurants including Chipotle, McDonald’s, and Subway that contained some form of the chemical that have negative health effects. Looking at 400 samples of packaging, researchers found that 33% contained some form of the chemical fluorine or PFASs, polyfluoroalkyl substances harmful to your health. PFASs are used to coat food wrappers and containers to prevent grease and water from leaking. PFASs have been linked to some cancers, decreased fertility, hypertension in pregnancy, low birth weight, thyroid disease, and a weakened immune system. These chemicals stay in the body (and in the environment) for long periods of time. More than half of dessert and bread wrappers and 38 percent of burger and sandwich wrappers tested contained the PFASs. Just 20 percent of paperboard, which might hold French fries, was found to have PFASs. When the researchers analyzed a subset of 20 pieces of fast-food packaging, they found PFASs in all of them, and six contained perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), that have been most strongly linked to health problems. Preparing and eating fresh organic foods prepared at home should be your first choice, but if you have to eat out, make sure you remove your food from its wrapper as soon as possible.
