Junk food and depression! Welcome to another HealthNews video news release brought to you by HealthNews. In today’s news we look at the teenage depression and the energy drink-junk food connection. The rate of young people diagnosed with anxiety and depression has sky rocketed in the last few years and research is pointing at energy drinks and junk food as one of the major culprits. New research by RMIT University in Melbourne found energy drinks and junk food to be not only bad for waistlines – but also for the teen brain, damaging their mental health. According to the researchers, these products cripple developing brains with such an intense rush of dopamine hormones that they pose a ‘unique’ mental health risk to young people. In addition, an additive used in energy drinks, taurine, can have adverse effects on learning and memory and increased alcohol consumption in females. Disruptions in levels of taurine have also been reported in numerous studies of neurological disorders – including epilepsy and autism. Teens need extra nutrients to support bone growth, hormonal changes, and organ and tissue development, including the brain. A diet that includes organic fruits and vegetable combined with regular exercise is the perfect formula for healthy teenage years.
