Outcomes of Acute and Chronic Patients With Magnetic Resonance Imaging–Confirmed Lumbar Disc Herniations Receiving Spinal Manipulative Therapy Welcome to another HealthNews video news release brought to you by HealthNews. In todays news, we look at chiropractic spinal manipulation in treating patients with herniated intervertebral disc. Approximately 70% of the population will have back pain at some point in time. Low-back pain with associated leg pain due to a herniated intervertebral disc is one of the most severe and disabling forms of back pain. Treatment options available can be grouped into 2 categories: surgical and conservative care. Conservative care may include medication, corticosteroid nerve root or epidural infiltrations, bed rest, physical therapy, flexion/distraction therapy, and chiropractic spinal manipulation. A study evaluated 148 patients (between ages of 18 and 65 years) with low-back pain, leg pain, and physical examination abnormalities with concordant lumbar disc herniations. The treatment was a specific lumbar spinal manipulation dependent upon whether the disc herniation was intraforaminal or paramedian as seen on the magnetic resonance images and was performed by a doctor of chiropractic. A large percentage of acute and importantly chronic lumbar disc herniation patients treated with chiropractic spinal manipulation reported clinically relevant improvement. At 3 months, 90.5% of patients were “improved” with 88.0% “improved” at 1 year. Although acute patients improved faster by 3 months, 81.8% of chronic patients reported “improvement” with 89.2% “improved” at 1 year. There were no adverse events reported. Remember you and your family can be as healthy as can be, and it’s never too soon to start receiving chiropractic care.
