The hills are alive again! The gorgeous Alps return to the big screen with a release of The Sound of Music. Julie Andrews won audiences' hearts as the endlessly loving Maria back in 1965, when The Sound of Music topped Gone With the Wind as the highest-grossing film to date. This story of an untameable young nun turned indispensable nanny continues to charm families over 50 years later with Maria's love of song, life, and laughter. An instant box office hit, the film won five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (Robert Wise), and Best Original Music Score. Our favourite songs from golden age Broadway duo Rogers and Hammerstein return, including "So Long, Farewell", "Do Re Mi" and "My Favourite Things". Indulging in the classic cinema-going experience, this release also includes an intermission for leg-stretching and snack-buying. The Sound of Music will begin a tour in 70mm at BFI Southbank on 18 May. A new 4K restoration is also available. Screenings are supported by a refresh of the iconic original poster and trailer that revive vivacious characters with appropriately vibrant tones.
