Mozart was only a fourteen-year-old boy when he composed the opera Mitridate, Rè di Ponto in 1770. The opera seria, a love story set against the background of an ancient king fighting against the Roman Empire, bears impressive evidence of the young composer's wunderkind qualities. Recorded live at the Opéra National de Lyon 1986, the staging was a cooperation with the Opéra National de Paris -- La Bastille, the most distinguished opera house in France. The highly popular Australian soprano Yvonne Kenny -- she sang at the Closing Ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games -- formed part of the international cast. Rockwell Blake in the title role has been hailed as a vocal phenomenon: his dramatic tenor encompasses a prodigious vocal range and is capable of the most fluid agility.
