Hoffmann once called it, is a work with many meanings. The inexhaustible array of interpretative possibilities represent a challenge to anyone who approaches this monumental work. Michael Hampe, who staged this new production at the Cologne Opera, concentrated his interpretations on two main points of emphasis. On the one hand, Don Giovanni appears "as the embodiment of absolute, irresistible, tempestuous life force, whom no borders can hold and who only finds his end in the metaphysical power of death", and on the other hand, "as a rebel against human order, against law and mortality, as the archetype of the social outside". To realize this ambitious project, Hampe was able to draw on a cast of first-rate soloists available anywhere. Thomas Allen is consiedered one of the most prominent Don Giovannis of our time. His fellow-artists are all on the same high musical and theatrical level: Ferruccio Furlanetto as Leporello, Matthias Hölle as the Commendatore and Reinhard Dorn as Masetto. The American soprano, Carol Vaness, the Donna Anna, is also on of the top Mozart interpreters of our time. James Conlon, on the podium of Cologne's Gürzenich Orchestra provides the proper musical inspiration for this intriguing performance. Subscribe: goo.gl/jrui3M
