If you want a SHTF fire starting method, don't carry a fire steel, fire steel isn't much better than a lighter. Instead learn how to make a bow-drill fire. Warning, this takes time to master. Don't think that watching me do it here is enough. If you want to have this as a backup then you need to practice. It takes time to get it down and to learn to recognize wood that will work well for your set up.
