BP responded that Corexit 9500 is the best option given the EPA's three criteria of effectiveness, low toxicity and availability. The agency then said on Monday that BP's response "lacked sufficient analysis," and that government scientists would begin conducting their own tests to explore a less-toxic alternative. The EPA has issued statements that both support and express concern about the use of dispersants in the gulf, claiming the products decrease the risk oil poses to shorelines but that there is still much uncertainty over how wildlife is affected. The agency has directed BP to ultimately limit the use of dispersant as much as possible.
