Food & Water Watch Critical of President's Proposed Budget for NOAA's Gulf of Mexico Spill Recovery Efforts. Washington, DC - Approximately one year after the biggest oil spill in U.S. history, national consumer advocacy group Food & Water Watch released a report detailing the public health and environmental fallout from the unprecedented use of chemical dispersants in the Gulf of Mexico, and called attention to skewed budget priorities for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the President's 2012 budget proposal. According to the report, the administration's 2012 budget for NOAA - the agency tasked with conserving and managing living marine resources - would include $2.9 million on oil spill recovery efforts in the Gulf of Mexico, while allocating almost $60 million to promote policies that would further harm many fishermen and the Gulf environment. Gulf Still Suffering Consequences of Dispersant Use www.sott.net/articles/show/227404-Gulf-Still-Suffering-Consequences-of-Dispersant-Use Deepwater Horizon: This was no Armageddon This conspiracy nugget was rehearsed to me the other day by Karen Hopkins, a resident of Grand Isle, a barrier island in Louisiana that is lined by what is essentially the state's only public beach. She also manages a seafood processing plant there that was, without doubt, hurt by everything that followed the explosion on board the Deepwater Horizon oil rig a few miles offshore one year ago tomorrow. But does she honestly think the White House capable of such blatant hoodwinkery? And is she on the level when, with great emotion, she tells this reporter that, 12 months on, life on Grand Isle is more ruined than ever? Though vivid enough, Hopkins has only a bit-part in the tragedy that consumed the United States through a large portion of last summer and which is still playing out, though to a much smaller audience. Her place was with the chorus of innocent -- and often very angry -- victims in the story. She recently told Kevin Feingold, the man in charge of distributing BP cheques to local Louisianans most affected by the disaster, that he can "rot in hell" before she takes the paltry $5,000 on offer. She intends to sue. But this tragedy is more complicated than at first presented and it's possible that Hopkins is playing two roles at once, the second in a subplot not much noticed before. Its storyline is about politics and money and greed, and is much less about the actual science of last year's spill. In fact, at times it has followed a script that has been in direct conflict with the available scientific evidence. www.independent.co.uk/environment/deepwater-horizon-this-was-no-armageddon-2269584.html One Year Later, Gulf Still Suffering from Environmental, Health Consequences of Unprecedented Dispersant Use www.foodandwaterwatch.org/pressreleases/one-year-later-gulf-still-suffering-from-environmental-health-consequences-of-unprecedented-dispersant-use/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+foodandwaterwatch%2Fpress+(FWW+Press+Release)&utm_content=Twitter Scientists judge the overall health of the Gulf of Mexico as nearly back to normal one year after the BP oil spill www.artofmaking.com/index.php/en/arts-section/37-most-popular/17392-scientists-gulf-health-nearly-at-pre-spill-level-ap
