Great Lakes all time high water temp record nearing!! Summer survival training Kaz vs. Wild 3 Kaz vs. Wild season 3 will be at Frankfort Michigan, September 16th - 22nd!! I've been asked several times if this is a "men only" survival trip. This survival trip is open to everyone; it is not a men only trip, ladies and women survivalists are welcome to attend. There is NO CHARGE to camp!! www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOo5nmV7Rng ----------------------- Lake Superior SWIMMING ANYONE? LAKE SUPERIOR WATER TEMPS WARMEST IN A CENTURY!! 74.8 degrees - Surface water temp on Lake Superior near Duluth this morning 70s - water temps along the North Shore from Duluth all the way to Grand Marais minnesota.publicradio.org/collections/special/columns/updraft/archive/2012/07/balmy_70s_2012_lake_superior_w.shtml "It's pretty safe to say that what we're seeing here is the warmest that we've seen in Lake Superior in a century," said Jay Austin, a professor at the University of Minnesota at Duluth, who has researched the lake's water temperatures back to the beginning of the 20th century. The all-time daily average high temperature record for Lake Superior is 71°F, which was recorded in mid-August 2010. With a few more weeks of warming left, that record is in jeopardy. "The season hasn't played itself out yet and we're already within 3 degrees of the all-time daily record surface temperature," Austin said. In another sign of just how crazy warm 2012 has been in Minnesota and the nation, water temps are at record levels on Lake Superior and the Great Lakes this summer. The south buoy 43 miles off shore from Milwaukee recorded a water temp of 80 degrees on July 6th this year! That's unheard of so early in July; the average for July 6th is a cool 63F! LAKE SUPERIOR HEATING UP IN 2012 "Temperatures for this time of year are about twenty degrees Fahrenheit warmer than normal, in the western part of the lake; we are more than 12 degrees warmer than the 30 year average," said Jay Austin from the University of Minnesota-Duluth's Large Lake Observatory. "It has been the warmest summer in 142 years of data gathering in the Duluth area," said Meteorologist Mike Stewart. www.northlandsnewscenter.com/news/local/Lake-Superior-Heating-up-in-2012-164335296.html HOT TIMES FOR A COLD LAKE!! Lake Superior headed for record temp from the Great Lakes Echo says that Lake Superior is already the warmest it's been at this time of year in at least a century. The group Climate Central recently reported that Lake Superior began warming earlier than normal because of low lake ice cover, the March heat wave and warm temps have kept the heat on. michpics.wordpress.com/2012/07/27/hot-times-for-a-cold-lake/ NORTHERN PIKE DIE-OFF ATTRIBUTED TO HIGH WATER TEMPS. Hot weather is causing summer fish kills and the mortalities of northern pike in many of Michigan's rivers due to extremely high water temperatures. www.grandhaventribune.com/content/northern-pike-die-attributed-high-water-temps?similar RECORD SUMMER HEAT KILLING MORE FISH This summer's unusually high temperatures and continuing drought are killing fish across the Great Lakes region. "There's nothing wrong water quality-wise," said Randy Schumacher, fisheries supervisor for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. "The species simply can't tolerate that hot of water for this extended period of time." There were multiple reports of fish kills in early July across Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois, according to state fisheries supervisors. There have been at least 60 separate incidents in Illinois. About a dozen have been reported in Indiana. As many as 350 northern pike were confirmed killed in one Wisconsin report, though most of the kills are of less than 100 fish. A few fish kills have also been reported in Ohio, New York and Pennsylvania, but they have been linked to sources other than high water temperatures by each state's regulating agency. In Wisconsin and Michigan, most of the reports are from the south. greatlakesecho.org/2012/07/31/record-summer-heat-killing-more-fish/
