It takes a village to raise a child - street gangs and motherhood | Alice Morell | TEDxStKilda

Mothering shouldn’t be thankless, nor should stay at home parents be afraid to ask for help. The extended village of yesterday might be ancient history, but Alice Morell is determined to bring it back in vogue, one street at a time. Street Gangs Founder Alice Morell questions the modern conception of independent parenting, proposing an alternative style that accommodates flexible work options, pools not only cars but skills, and provides a community of support for one of life’s hardest and most underrated jobs – parenting. Subscribe to TEDxStKilda for ideas worth spreading, produced by Geonewmedia. www.tedxstkilda.com After a long career in finance that moved her from the UK to Australia, the turning point for Alice came when she had a baby. She realised the extent of the role of mothers in our world and how little that is acknowledged, celebrated and supported. She started The Mother Movement that runs projects to empower all mothers. Street Gangs build local community networks for mothers and their families. Tough Mother is an annual campaign launching this year that puts dads into the shoes of mums for the weekend before Mothers’ Day, so that they can experience the role of motherhood. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx
