MySQL 2 - Installing MySQL
MySQL is cross platform, so you can install this on numerous operating systems. You do not have to have windows. MySQL can be downloaded from this link: dev.mysql.com/downloads/mysql/. In this video, I chose to install the MSI as that makes the process a lot easier for us. If you are installing MySQL on a different operating system you will have to install it slightly different. When installing, we chose the custom route. That is because MySQL installs a lot of extra stuff we are not going to be needing for this series. The only two things I chose to install are the MySQL Server and MySQL Workbench. MySQL Workbench will be discussed in the next video, but it is essentially a visual tool for working with our database. MySQL has a lot of different things you should pay attention to. You don't want to set it up a certain way and then forget how you set it up. Luckily, if you follow this video, you can come back to this video to learn how I installed MySQL. The only thing you will absolutely have to remember is the password you give the root account. Think of the root account as the super admin…admin. Give it a simple password, such as "password" You should also take note of the windows service name, as this will change with different versions of MySQL. For example, my service is called MySQL57. Yours might be called 58, or 59. This correlates to the version of MySQL you are running. Don't worry, if yours is a higher number, this series is probably still relevant. If you ever need to restart the server, you can go to your services and restart the MySQL Service. You will likely need to configure some network settings, too. If you are working locally for learning sake, what I've done in this video should be adequate. lastly, we discussed the command prompt and ran our first SQL command. Hopefully this video was helpful.
