A large male jaguar quietly approached, appearing ready to pounce. Interestingly, the jaguar simply observed the anteater, choosing to watch it instead of devouring it. A researcher for the Pantanal Jaguar Project says this is not as uncommon as one might think. In the Pantanal, less than five percent of the jaguar’s diet consists of anteaters. Instead, the big cats often prefer hunting caiman, capybara, and peccary. This lucky anteater will live to see another day.
