The project included a substantial number of new Labor Delivery & Recovery (LDR) rooms for birthing and patient recovery. The owner’s nursing staff were experiencing difficulty imagining or visualizing the relationships between the patient, nurse, equipment and space for workflow in the traditional documents that the architect had produced. The decision was made to mock up the design virtually to allow the clinical staff to better understand the design, and have the opportunity to shift the design before the final Construction Documents were completed. During the VR session the clinical staff took turns wearing the VR headset to enter the room and experience the space and workflow in the room. They quickly determined that several pieces of equipment should be moved to new locations for reasons they had not realized in reviewing the 2D plans.
