Visit us on the web: www.BentonBible.com When we are "born again" by faith in Christ Jesus, the Holy Spirit begins and continues the administration of Jesus' rule and reign in our hearts as Lord of our lives. The Sermon on the Mount is Jesus' description of the inner workings and change that the Holy Spirit administrates spiritually in our inner (core) being. The "beattitudes" are a look at the fundamental changes and affects that the Holy Spirit produces in our hearts as born again children of God. They comprise a kind of "Declaration of Independence" from the old "law of sin and death" and they promise the freedom of a new life under the "law of the Spirit of life" (see Romans 8:1-2) The first two beattitudes in Matthew 5:3&4 show that, through Christ, we are free from "the tyranny of self-rule" and the "tow of self-indulgence" and that self is deposed from the throne of our hearts in favor of Jesus and that the new basis for life is no longer "self-pleasing", but is now, instead a life and desire for "God-pleasing"! Ephesians 5:10 summarizes it beautifully: "And find out what pleases the Lord".
