Raspberry Ripple (1986) TV Movie Stars: Faye Dunaway, John Gordon Sinclair and Nabil Shaban Written by Rupert Haselden, based on a play by Gurmeet Kasba Director: Nigel Finch Produced by Ruth Caleb Cast Credited cast: Faye Dunaway John Gordon Sinclair Nabil Shaban Sheila Reid Elly Wilkie When I was being interviewed for a part in "Raspberry Ripple", I was not in a good mood. i had read the script beforehand and thought it was complete rubbish, and did not reflect the real experiences of a young disabled person in a sheltered institution for disabled adults. I should know because from the age of 16 to 19 I was an inmate in such a residential home and workshops for cripples. At the start of the interview I was asked what did I think of the script, and without hesistation I told the producer, Ruth Caleb, the director, Nigel Finch and the writer, Rupert Hasledon, that it was a load of bollocks. they were shocked at first but then all three smiled and appreciated my honesty. they asked why I thought this and I said it was too twee and sugary and sanitized, and contained no real anger and frustration, no nastiness with vicious violent bullying among the residents, which would be the norm for such places. I told them I had started to write a similar script, KING OF THE INCURABLES, based on my actual experiences. However, despite my forthright criticisms, I was still asked if I would be in the film. I replied what role were they offering, and they said "Bill the Sneak". This disappointed me, as I wanted the lead Crip role, but they wanted a non-disabled star for that part. As usual, genuine disabled actors are only good for character and cameo roles. The romantic leads must always go to Hollywood aesthetically perfect movie stars...that is how "Body Fascist" the movie industry is. Of course, the producers wouldn't admit to this prejudice, and so made the pathetic excuse that I couldn't play the lead as I was too old for the part. However, i needed the work, so i swallowed my objections and accepted the role on offer - BILL - which incidentally, I later discovered, infuriated Ian Dury, because that role had been originally written for him, or so he told me.
