Oprah Winfrey on Her Tonys Win, the Orlando Mass Shooting, and the Presidential Election

Fresh off winning a Tony for “The Color Purple,” Oprah Winfrey headed straight for Washington, D.C., where she participated in the United State of Women Summit with none other than First Lady Michelle Obama. Last night, Oprah spoke to “Extra’s” AJ Calloway while debuting her latest OWN project, “Greenleaf,” in Los Angeles. The always eloquent Winfrey had a difficult time expressing her feelings over the deadliest mass shooting in our country’s history, which took place in Orlando over the weekend. “What can you say about it? I think until the country is ready to come to a sense of consciousness about what we're doing and allowing with assault weapons… And I think both sides have a point. I hear the other side that [say], ‘Guns don't kill people, people kill people.' That is true. But could we just agree that having assault weapons… could we just agree on that? Could we just start with somewhere? Could we say as conscious people in the world who care about other people, ya know, 'Do what Australia did in 1995 or 1996?' After they had that massive shooting, in weeks they banned assault weapons. So I think that would be a good start."
