ProTips: Football: How to Catch a Football

Learn how to reel in every pass thrown your way this football season, as well as how to cut and continue the play with these receiving Pro Tips. When catching the ball, you should first focus on your hand positioning. If the ball is in front of you as the receiver, you want to make sure your arms are extended to catch the ball at the furthest point from the body. If the ball is thrown above the waist, you also want to make sure that your thumbs are pointed in facing each other. Your index fingers should be up and touching to form a triangular-shaped pocket to catch the ball. If the ball is below your waist, the pinky fingers should be together with the thumbs pointed out. Tracking the ball is another key for all receivers. You want to watch the point of the ball all the way into your hands. If the defender is coming from your right or left, secure the ball by tucking it in tight to your chest. Keep it high and tight and turn to get up the field. One of the hardest decisions to make is when you catch the ball and the defender is right behind you. In this case, bring the ball directly in to your breast plate to secure it. From there, squat down low, spin on your feet — while staying balanced — and turn up field. You must be prepared to take a hit, so always make sure to secure the ball tight. On every throw, use your hands and eyes to make a clean catch, ready to secure the ball and get up field.
