NAZ Today reporter Xavier Rangel takes a look at the Flagstaff Model Railroad Club and the history of the railways in Flagstaff. Around 80 trains travel through Flagstaff and could be considered the veins of city. Ted Ferkenhoff, Model Railroad Club Member, says the city owes its existence to the railroad, it was able to thrive because of it helped it grow. Steven Ritchey, Model Railroad Club Member, says he grew up watching Thomas the Tank Engine and ever since his love of trains has grown. Dave Nash, President of the Model Railroad Club, says his love of trains started as a kid, but was put on hold until he had kids of his own. When he had two boys brought them to the club and began helping with the maintenence of the trains. Nash now brings his grandchildren in top the club. The club works year-round on the 50 ft train setup that depicts much of Northern Arizona. As a whole, they make a real effort for accuracy by renovating sections to keep them as up to date as possible. The Flagstaff Model Railroad Club will be debuting their new section of the model train set at the county fair this year. The club is also holding an open house this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Coconino County Fairgrounds.
