Effective Mulching

Proper mulching is very beneficial for landscapes, but one of the worst mistakes you can make when caring for a landscape is overmulching. For more information on the benefits of properly mulching, visit www.davey.com Shawn Fitzgerald, a Davey Tree Service expert and Landscape Horticulturist, discusses the importance of properly mulching and the benefits that you and your trees will reap from it. When mulch is piled up against the trunk of the tree, it creates excessive moisture, which in turn creates fungus and disease. It also gives insects a place to harbor. We want to pull the mulch away from the tree so it is not against the trunk. By pulling the mulch away we are mimicking the wild and putting the tree back into a natural setting. Trees that are not mulched correctly can contain enough excess mulch to be used for up to three other trees. Moving mulch farther away from the stem of the tree will help to reduce the chance for insect or disease. Increasing the drip line will also help to reduce the chance for string trimmer or mower damage. Contact your local, professionally trained arborist for a complete site inspection. Always remember that proper mulching is very beneficial to your property and your budget!
