Avocados have a strange method of reproduction. All avocado flowers open twice. First as a functional female; the following day the same flower will open as a functional male. To make things more interesting there are two flowering types called "A" type and "B" type. "A" type trees will have female flowers in the morning. Roughly 36 hours later those female flowers will reopen as males. "B" type trees will have female flowers in the afternoon. Roughly 12 hours later those female flowers will reopen as males the following morning. Notice that having both "A" and "B" type trees close to each other improves pollination because "A" type trees have female flowers at the same time that "B" type trees have male flowers and vice versa.
