Step 2 – Going across the hill Before trying a 360 downhill, learn it by going across the hill. Let’s check the key points that we learned in Step 1. 1. Have an actual riding image in your head while practicing 2. Hips over the heel edge to pop and spin nicely 3. Pull your fore arm to help rotate hips 4. Rotate and pull your hind arm up to keep your body straight 5. Suck up your knees after popping to get more rotation 6. Rotate your chest 45 degrees ahead of the board while your board rotates 180 degrees 7. Keep focusing on your center of balance while spinning To generate a spin on a downhill and park jump you need to lean your body to make an edge angle. So the spin axis leans inside easily and the spin will be messed up. Traversing is the easiest and best way to start learning spinning. It’s because you can make an edge angle without leaning your body while traversing. So you can easily have an edge angle and straight spin axis at the same time. Ok! Let’s start with checking your balance on the edge with a pop while traversing. As we learned on the flat ground, try standing straight on the heel edge. So that your hips are aligned over the heel edge. It shouldn’t be aligned perfectly, but try having the feeling of having a strong balance over the edge. Check if you are jumping and landing on both feet as well. It’s better if your snowboard keeps carving while jumping. So that your toe-to-heel and nose-to-tail balance are in a good position. You will be good enough even if the edge is sliding, but you will also keep your balance when you pop and land. Now after popping a couple of times, let’s spin a 180 and keep rotating your upper body after landing the 180 and make your nose face forward again. Keep your body straight and pull your front arm to rotate your hips. Rotate and pull your back arm up high so you can prevent your body from leaning over the edge or backwards. Rotate your chest 45 degrees more than that snowboard when you land a 180 so your upper body can keep pulling your hips. Once you are getting used to it, try spinning 270 with more pop and by sucking up your knees Then bring the nose back to a forward-facing position by keeping your upper body rotating. If your weight is more on your front foot when you pop, try jumping forward instead of jumping inside of the turn arc. Or you can go back to “spinning 180” + “180 revert on the ground” to check your balance when generating spin. If you can make it constantly then try spinning a 360 with more pop and suck up knees. Let’s check the key points again. 1. Have an actual riding image in your head while practicing 2. Hips over the heel edge to pop and spin nicely 3. Pull your fore arm to help rotate hips 4. Rotate and pull your hind arm up to keep your body straight 5. Suck up your knees after popping to get more rotation 6.
