The reason for the difference in the two is said to be the extreme harshness and brutality of the work that slaves in Brazil had to endured in comparison to African American slaves, leading to a higher mortality rate among Afro Brazilian slaves, and the need for more and more slave needing to be imported from Africa to Brazil across the middle passage.
