This journey was known as the slave trade middle passage. Many slave died on slave ships during the middle passage from disease, starvation, mistreatment and and were thrown into the Atlantic Ocean, while others committed suicide or were killed by their slave ship masters. On arriving in USA, the Caribbean, Brazil and other parts of South America many slaves were forced to work on slave plantations under terrible conditions, working 18 hours a day, from sunrise to sunset. Such was the harshness of the working conditions, many slave died prematurely from beatings of their slave maters or sheer exhaustion. American slave trade history reveals some of the despicable ways in which Africans slaves were treated in America. However only 5% of all African slaves from the slave trade were taken to America, the number of African American slaves rose quickly in comparison to Brazil where 40% of all slaves from the African slave trade were taken to. The reason for the difference in the two is said to be the extreme harshness and brutality of the work that slaves in Brazil had to endured in comparison to African American slaves, leading to a higher mortality rate among Afro Brazilian slaves, and the need for more and more slave needing to be imported from Africa to Brazil across the middle passage.
