Welcome to ForB's English lesson video! This time Kevin is going to explain how to pronounce "GIRL." And, for today's lesson, we're going to practice some pronunciation. And for today's pronunciation, we're going to work on the word "girl." Now "girl" is a very short and simple word in English. It's only one syllable just like "big, tall, short," but it can be tough for some students to say. Especially the middle sound and the last sound are a little difficult to say and put together smoothly. So, we're gong to practice a first, middle and last sound and then work them together to make the single word, "girl." Now, to start we have the "g" sound. For the "g" sound, notice my mouth doesn't move so much. My mouth is a little bit open and back in your mouth, back in your throat, your back of your tongue lifts a little bit to make the "g, g." But, your lips, your jaw, no movement. "G, g." Let's give it a try. Repeat after me. "G, g, g." OK. Very good. Now, we come to another tough sound, that middle sound. Now for the middle sound, we do want an "rr" sound. Mistake many students make is making an "R" sound. Watch my mouth as I say these two sounds. "Rrr, ar, rrr, ar." Notice there's a big difference in my mouth. For the "ar" sound my mouth is very open. We don't want that for "girl." Instead, we want the "rr." Again, mouth a little bit open. Just like for the "g" sound. Again, tongue will be kind of in the middle of our mouth. This time no movement by our tongue. It will just hang in the middle of our mouth, not move at all. Your lips might push out a little bit. "Rr, rr." Again, jaw doesn't move. So, when it goes from "g", "rr", very little change in our mouth. "Rr, rr." Like I said. You can push your lips out a little bit if that helps you make this sound. But, just a little open, no movement. Let's repeat after me. "Rr, rr, rr." OK. Very good. Now, our last sound is the "L" sound. But this is very tough to do, to change from the "rr" to the "l." Also, we don' want any extra sounds at the end. Again, a lot of students make it a "lu" like an "uu" sound at the end. We don't want that in saying "girl." We want to end right on the "L." So, instead of saying "e, el," I'm going to suggest we say "ul, ul." So almost like an "ul" sound but a very soft "u" before the "L." "Ul, ul." For this sound our tongue is going to move from the middle of our mouth, the tip will move upward to push against the top of our mouth, "ul, ul." Again, mouth is open a little bit, not so much movement. "Ul, ul." Repeat after me. "Ul, ul, ul." Can you get it? It's a tough sound but with some practice, I'm sure you can do it. So, we got our three sounds, now let's start putting them together. First, let's work on the first two sounds. "Gir, gir, gir, g-r, gir, gir." Repeat after me again. Only first two sounds. "Gir, gir, gir." OK. Very good, very good. Now, let's work on the second two sounds, again ignore the first sound. "Irl, irl, irl." Try to get that "ir" sound. "Irl, irl." Repeat after me. "Irl, irl, irl." OK. Pretty good, pretty good. Now, let's put all of these sounds together. I'll start slowly and then pick up the pace a little bit. "Girl, girl, girl, girl, girl, girl." OK? Let's try. Repeat after me. "Girl, girl, girl." OK. Three times very fast. "Girl, girl, girl." OK. Very good. Now, like I said this looks like a simple word but it can be tough to say. This "irl" combination is very common. There are many English words that use this such as "curl, world." All have that "irl" sound in them. So if you can get it, with practice, it can make saying a lot of English words much easier. Well, thank you very much for watching our video today.
