More and more searches for everything imaginable are carried out on Youtube, as a matter of fact it's the second most used search engine after Google itself. Like Google, the number of items returned for a phrase such as 'blues guitar lessons' is formidable - how to pick out the lessons that's best for you? Youtube guitar lessons include all manner of formats and instruction levels, both paid and free of charge. Many of the big boys in guitar lesson sales have developed a very effective selling style that use many forms of psychological hooks to get you to pay. Just a beginner? That's OK - we'll have you picking like a professional in 3 weeks. Know a few chords and can strum a bit? We'll take your playing to the next level. You play very well? This course will turn you into Eric Clapton, and so it goes. Amongst my favorites is the ubiquitous advert 'The 3 Awful Mistakes That Most Guitarists Make", or something like that, which is almost difficult to resist, it must be admitted. Truth is, playing great guitar means a lot of work, commitment and time. Naturally, the learning process could be made quicker with clear instruction and precise blues guitar tabs. Guitar tablature is the basis of the best guitar lessons. It needn't be super complex at all, with just elementary notation showing finger movements and chord diagrams. Some tab just goes too far, attempting to convey the feel and ambiance of authentic blues playing, which just isn't possible! This leads us to the second characteristic of the best blues guitar lessons - the instructor must be able to play the stuff to a high level (and the tablature should adequately represent what he is playing.) Guitar tablature alone isn't enough to translate that subtle pause, or the thumb strike that is a little off-beat when needed to accentuate the words. Of course, the tablature system can show that a single thumb strike should be damped with the palm of the hand, but can't tell us that the damping effect itself isn't constant, but changes in intensity as the pressure of the palm on the strings is continually being changed depending the flow of the song. There's no need to hurry when looking for any teachings, whatever kind you are looking for. The Chinese have a saying 'a year or two spent doing nothing but locating the right teacher is time well spent'. That's about right. You might not need to spend a year in your quest, but make your choice carefully and side-step all the hype. Don't think that you'll improve in just a few short days weeks, take it easy, don't be hard on yourself and most importantly, savor the music and the journey.
