The Director General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Joseph Odumodu on Friday said "things are getting better" while speaking on the high rate of substandard goods being sold in Nigeria. Odumodu said "Things are getting better. They may not have gotten to where I thought they should be in the last two years but they are a lot better than when we started this journey two years ago". He said the organisation has some solutions that will end the influx of substandard products into the Nigerian market while speaking as a guest on Channels Television's breakfast flagship programme, Sunrise Daily. He however noted that limitations in infrastructure, shortage of staff has forced the organisation to "focus on life endangering products". He added that gas cylinders must not be used for over 15 years in Nigeria but lamented the fact that "people go abroad, buy old cylinders, paint them and sell them as if they are new ones". He also admitted that there are some areas where the organisation has not done well in, mentioning the tyre industry as one. "For example tyres... when I started, you will observe that I seized millions of tyres but I have actually kept low" adding that "if you get the tyres, how do you dispose of them". He further revealed that that the organisation has been able to convince a local investor to invest in the disposal of tyres and warned importers of fake tyres into the country to beware because "we are coming after them". He said the organisation had to go low on tyre seizures because of the environmental threat the disposal cause to the community. Odumodu also spoke on the challenges the organisation faces in carrying out its constitutional duties. For more information log on to www.channelstv.com.
