The island is situated on the heart of the Greater Antilles between Cuba and, Jamaica to the west and Puerto Rico to the east. The second largest country in the Caribbean, the Dominican Republic covers two thirds of the island of Hispaniola which it shares with Haiti. The country is divided into 29 provinces and a national district. There are three main mountain ranges that cross the country. There is 1,566 kilometres of coastline, over a third being beach, with some of the highest mountains in the West Indies the summit of which culminates at Pico Duarte, reaching an altitude of 3,175 metres.
