RFK Delivers News of MLK Assassination

submitted by eduvideos on 02/17/14 1

In 1968, Robert F. Kennedy was campaigning to earn the Presidential nomination for the Democratic Party. On April 4th, Kennedy received news that Martin Luther King Jr. had been assassinated and in the midst of political speeches he addressed the situation at a rally in the heart of inner city Indianapolis. Kennedy's address was intended to dampen the potential violence that might occur that night, and was successful. He gave the crowd a reason to stay positive and follow in the footsteps that King had started. RFK dealt with this emotional and race fueled tragedy and reassured predominantly black local supporters that he personally stood with them in this very emotional time. This episode of PODIUM features: Adam Frankel, Robert Lehrman, and Charlton McIlwain. A Very Special Thanks to Evan Phillip Freed for providing photographs taken of Robert F. Kennedy along the campaign trail in 1968.
