Hiking with Charlie

submitted by TheKOE on 12/28/16 1

I took Charlie to the Welwyn Preserve in Glen Cove yesterday (Friday, May 27). There are nature trails that run thought the preserve and end at a beach on Long Island Sound. The trails are not truly maintained and there are signs saying no dogs allowed, however, I did see other people with dogs and I asked and they said they have been doing it for years and never had a problem. There are many fallen trees blocking some portions of the trail and some were simply left while others were partially cut up. It is not a place for people with limited mobility. The Welwyn Preserve runs off Crescent Beach Rd and New Woods Rd, and borders the Webb Institute of Naval Architecture in Glen Cove, NY. The area has been used as movie settings for a long time, due to the expansive and unusual old school "Gold Coast" estates of days gone by. Near here is the former Reynolds estate from Reynolds Aluminum fame, as well as buildings that have been used as Wayne Manor in the Batman movies and both versions of the movie Sebrina. The pictures that follow the video are an abandoned log cabin that has managed to still stand, despite vandalism and fire damage, and an overgrown archway that must have been part of the Welwyn estate and gardens. The entire estate is completely overgrown with vegetation and the former majestic gardens are long choked with weeds and brush. Tremendous greenhouses lie shattered and covered in graffiti, yet they mechanical presence still is evident. Its quite impressive seeings all this, and to know that one guy owed all that land at one point is amazing in this day and age.
