How to Quantize a MIDI performance - Tutorial

submitted by SteveNossiter on 12/28/16 1

A tutorial on how to use the Quantize function in Pro Tools 12 for MIDI. In this tutorial you'll learn how to: 1 - Open the Quantize window 2 - Quantize an entire clip at once 3 - Quantize individual notes or selected notes 4 - lock only the start of the note, lock the entire note or lock both the start and end of the note to onto the grid lines 5 - Quantize triplets/tuplets 6 - Add swing to the performance 7 - Keep an element of 'Human performance' by reducing the strength of the quantize function Quantizing is something I learned very early on basically because I'm not great at performing right on tempo. This saved many of my performances by giving me a very quick way of locking my notes into the grid. But wait - Doesn' that make the performance robotic? Well, yes it can, if you don't use it well. I'll teach you how to keep your personal flavour of performance while tightening it up in a number of different ways. Quantizing is a tool, not a quick fix and like any tool needs skill and practice to use well. This is by no means an exhaustive tutorial. That'd take ages. If you have any ways that you use Quantizing, tips, ideas, things to watch out for, please share in the comments. Please leave a comment if you have any experiences or additional information you can add. We're all eager to learn new stuff so go wild. Steve.
