China launches its first carbon dioxide monitoring satellite for studying climate change

China on Thursday successfully launched its first carbon dioxide monitoring satellite, TanSat, from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, in northwest China’s Gobi Desert. The satellite will help the country monitor the distribution, concentration and flow of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere. It will also enable China to better understand climate change, and provide policy makers with independent data.
