Wide exterior of Denpasar district court STORYLINE : A 17-year-old Japanese boy was sentenced to six months in prison on Thursday for possessing a small amount of marijuana while vacationing with family on Indonesia's resort island of Bali. Judge Gunawan Tri Budiono told the Denpasar district court that though the boy could have faced up to 12 years under Indonesia's tough narcotics laws, he decided to be lenient in passing sentence as the teenager was still young, has a future ahead of him, and bought the drugs for personal use. "The verdict handed down by the judge was very light and the defendant states that he accepts the sentence," said defence lawyer Ahmad Hadiana. The teen, who cannot be named under Indonesian law because of his age, has been detained in a police cell since August 8, after buying drugs near popular Kuta beach and authorities found 2.6 grams (0.09 ounces) of marijuana at his pocket while vacationing with his mother. Budiono said the boy would be freed in February next year, when taking into account time already served, and immediately deported. Last year, a 14-year-old Australian boy avoided prison after serving two months in an Indonesian detention centre for buying drugs. The court also showed leniency after he expressed remorse and was able to prove it was for personal use.
