Check out this sweet VFX Breakdown for "Iron Man Gamma Protocol", a short film currently in development by the talented by Anthony Mcgrath! The original inspiration for this short animation literally happened about one week after i finished Iron Man Mk Z! I set about blocking out a model for Hulkbuster mostly for fun at this point! I always wanted to put a Hulk vs Hulkbuster sequence together for a long long time but i had an issue - I really didn't want it to just be an empty fight sequence it has to tell a little story. I actually drew upon a series of short stories in the Marvel comics universe subtitled "what if" and i thought it would be fun to tackle my own short "what if" sequence. Enter Mark Cushley who saw me blocking out my Hulkbuster model and had lots of input for how he should look. He had already saved me massively putting a RDJ based Tony Stark facial rig together for me for my Iron Man mk Z fanimation i had done the year before and he was quite excited about tackling the hulk especially after seeing Avengers Assemble. His character modelling abilities are truly phenomenal and its one of the strong arms of his own company now so i'm excited to watch that grow & flourish for him :) For the characters both Hulk & Tony Stark (RDJ) were modelled & textured by Mark Cushley. No digital scan data was used - its purely google images for reference of Mark Ruffalo for inspiration and ILM's images of Hulk from Avengers Assemble promotional material and hand-painted textures. Mark also created Tony Stark for my other short animation "Iron Man Mk Z" but he was never truly happy with that version of Tony Stark though (even though for me personally seeing him in the HUD is the highlight of that piece!). So Mark set about remodelling him to a higher resolution and more accurately so he could hold up to the 2580x1080 pixel resolution we've gone for. Another interesting angle for our short is in the title itself.. "Gamma Protocol" - this was dreamed up by an amazing concept artist named Paul Dolan #PaulDolanArt – the overriding question to us all being “what kind of system does Tony Stark have setup to tackle a truly annoyed Hulk?”. Paul set about this project with intense dedication - putting together initial paintovers and concept art to help enhance the look and show how various parts of the characters and environment can be enhanced! He was adamant that Hulkbuster should be fast and our Hulkbuster is a sort of Veronica mk2 if you will.. faster nippier and filled with just as many high tech gadgets. He also designed the logo too and is working on some assets for the final sequence which i dont want to share too much on just yet but there's a hint in the logo! He has been truly invaluable on this piece. There is still a good chunk of work to do for this short animation. I was hoping to get it finished last year but had a very difficult 2015 which involved flying from UK to Spain for a few months, then return, then out to Canada to work on X-men Apocalypse, but sadly had to leave before i could finish my contract so back to UK again! All the while with my wife and child in tow and our lives (and my pc!) in suitcases - every spare hour i could muster i have been working on this project and still am - its very close! My wife (who is equally Marvel obsessed as me ha!) has been truly incredible supporting me every step of the way with this sequence for 2 years now so i have to say without her by my side i wouldn't be nearly as close to finishing as i am.
