This classic experiment in heat can be done with very simple materials. You will need a wooden block, a hacksaw blade, piece of straw, shoe tack nails and a candle. First fix the hacksaw blade to the wooden block. Then drop molten wax and stick shoe nails which have a big head. Attach 5-6 nails at equal distances. On upturning the hacksaw blade you will see the nails hanging down. Place a lighted candle near the end of the hacksaw blade. This end will become hot and will gradually transmit the heat. As the blade get hot the wax will melt and the first nails will drop. It takes a while for the heat to travel. While travelling the heat also gets dissipated. After a while the second nail will drop and then the third and the fourth. The last fifth nail might fall after 15 minutes. So, you’ll have to wait. But all the nails will drop in a sequence.
