www.donegalcottageholidays.com Churchill and Gartan County Donegal. Churchill is a small village located 8 miles form Donegal's main town, Letterkenny. The name derives from its location on top of a small hilltop. There are 3 traditional style Irish pubs in the village - a fast disappearing sight in modern Ireland! Just to the north of Churchill the River Lennon runs into the beautiful Lough Gartan. Gartan is the birthplace of Colmcille - one of the foremost Irish Saints who founded the famous monastery on the Isle of Iona in Scotland. The Colmcille Heritage Centre on the shores of Lough Gartan celebrates his life and work. Nearby is the Glebe Gallery which contains the renowned Derek Hill Collection of Victorian and 20th century art works. Gartan Outdoor Pursuits Centre is situated on the shores of Loch Gartan and is a very popular destination for adventure holiday enthusiasts.
